Successes are everywhere regarding Oscar’s Modern Tennis Methodology (MTM), aka EZ-Tennis. Conventional tennis teaching has been proven to inhibit natural tennis ability but it will take years before the new modern tennis techniques are communicated and integrated in the grassroots coaching community. You don’t have to wait for years to find out how Modern Tennis is played. The proven answer has been here all along: Oscar Wegner - known as the “father of modern tennis.” If you are a beginner or reinvigorating your game, you should first learn these simple True Fundamentals demonstrated on the DVDs, showing the foundation of every modern player, whether they acknowledge it’s origin or are even aware of it. Players from age 3 to age 83 have had success playing EZ-Tennis.
What do coaches at the highest levels say about Oscar’s MTM? There are coaches who have never developed world ranked players much less actually coached one, who criticize MTM, so let us look at these successes by top coaches: If you are a student or tennis coach, this one comment below sums up why Oscar’s MTM works for everyone.
It only took one presentation from Oscar Wegner (at the 1995 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Coaches Convention) to understand that there was a better way to teach and play tennis. I should not even say better... this should be, and always should have been, the ONLY method! The idea of “conventional tennis” is greatly misunderstood. All great players - past and present - have played tennis using the mechanics that Oscar describes. Clearly Oscar understands these techniques, timing concepts, biomechanics and even the physics associated with hitting a tennis ball as well as anyone in the world. The great news is that with some focus and desire, any coach or player can also understand and implement these great methods. Over the past 11 years I have seen some of the most rapid development of collegiate level players take place largely through the application of these concepts and principals. Even players that have trained a different way for many years can adjust almost every stroke so that they are taking advantage of the methods Oscar teaches. More than anything else, it makes hitting a tennis ball feel great and become a very consistent, efficient and highly confident skill. |

A lot has been written about the modern forehand with its natural movements, open stance, windshield-wiper swing, and most importantly, tracking the ball and waiting before taking the racquet back. Much of this has been pioneered by Oscar Wegner, who has been teaching this method since 1968. Back then, this was very controversial, however, history has proved him right.

Oscar: We have not met, but I have long acknowledged that your teaching methods are light years ahead of those for most teaching professionals in our industry. I also happen to believe that our industry has complicated the learning process for so many players that they become discouraged and leave our sport too quickly. Your ideas simplify matters, and this is crucial.

When my children were very young and just starting to play tennis, Oscar gave them drills that were fun to do. He generated an interest and eagerness for the game so that they wanted to play more, and as a result, they became motivated to play better. Oscar's relaxed style of teaching conveys a sense of comfort and confidence to his students so that they look forward to working with him and can enjoy the consistent improvements that result from his teachings.

Oscar has broken the mold, demystifying the modern tennis stroke. There's genius in his analysis of pro techniques—the dynamics of what the racquet does to the ball, how power and spin are added. He understands how top pros really stroke the ball, and always have, all the way back to Tilden.

I know people that couldn’t learn tennis in two lifetimes, but they never met Oscar Wegner. This is a short course of you hitting balls, lots of them, soon. You will find it worthwhile to dump the past and join Oscar in your tennis future. In listening to him, I’ve unlearned a few things myself that I long considered gospel.

Oscar’s techniques are incredible. Back in 1982 he was with me (coaching) in Germany and the students called him “the American who taught tennis in two hours”. Over and over, he had total beginners rallying 40, 60 balls back and forth in just two hours of instruction. He also helped the Weiden Tennis Club have an undefeated junior tennis team that year and get our main team to the Bundesliga.

St. Louis Area Successes:
John, I was really impressed with the progress you made with my daughter. To see you give her just a few minutes instruction, without a racket just hitting the ball with her hand, to start hitting powerful forehand volleys WITH topspin and not hit one into the net? INCREDIBLE! Being from Missouri I was somewhat skeptical you could get the results you said you could. But boy did you ever! She has been trying for two years to get good coaching. She just had several lessons in Palm Springs at the La Quinta Club but did not get the dramatic results you achieved with her in just a few minutes! To watch her pick up on your and Oscar’s teaching quickly and show immediate improvement on areas she was just very poor at is just amazing. Good luck in introducing this teaching method to established coaches and students. It has been a real eye opener and let me assure anyone considering it, IT DOES WORK!!! Feel free to use me as a reference. |

I have been a St. Louis high school coach for 9 years, One of my players first told me about Oscar's method and I was intrigued. I attended some clinics and was impressed with how well the method worked. I was fortunate to find Jonathan Hertlein who was well versed in the Oscar method to coach my JV team. The girls have been very successful. I have watched beginners take their first lessons and gain skill and confidence quickly. They have responded very positively to Jonathan and the MTM. I am looking forward to working with Jonathan and the MTM in the future.

I had a hard time convincing my kids to take lessons again after conventional lessons failed to motivate them. They just weren’t having fun, and they weren't seeing any results. Then we tried EZ-tennis as a family and the change was dramatic! The kids not only saw immediate improvement in their games, they actually enjoyed the lessons. And after my friend Renee and I learned EZ-Tennis from you, we felt confident enough to join a league and are nearly undefeated! I wish every child could learn tennis this way from the start—there would be so many more lifetime players out there!

I have never been more relaxed on the court during and since that experience. John is a dynamite instructor of the Wegner Method. I was a stuck between 3.5 and 4.0 USTA player, but am playing at a 4.0 level now. I purchased the dvds and cannot wait to see them. I really enjoyed you're book - especially while watching Wimbledon and seeing you're Method of tennis is action! One two three four and five.........a rushed shot is an unforced error. I smoked a player this week in straight sets that I was previously beaten twice by. Even if I lost the match it would have been okay because there were shots I was making that I never had before and it was fun! Thank you for making tennis the fun game it should be!

I took Oscar and John up on their invitation to bring two total beginners and let Oscar teach them using EZ Tennis. I stood alongside Oscar as two personal friends of mine, a mother and her son, played tennis for the first time ever. I was amazed as within 45 minutes, they were rallying from just beyond the service line, not only keeping balls in play, without putting very many balls in the net, but hitting off both sides with topspin. They had no idea what they had accomplished, as it was so easy, but they were having a great deal of fun. The husband watching, knew he had just watched his wife and son become two new tennis players!

Hey John, I’m doing well. I just found someone to emphasize what Oscar teaches, especially about waiting for the ball, and I started playing better than I ever thought possible. My rankings and tournament results have been better than before, but now that I have a “coach” to remind me of everything Oscar says, I started feeling unbeatable on the court and started beating some people I lost to in the past. I still am visualizing about waiting for the ball, and still feel unbeatable. If you keep watching my ranking and tournament results, I am positive you will see me shoot to the top of every ranking list, that's how well I've started playing. It's like it’s all starting to come together, and I've been beating everyone in practice lately. Please give my BEST wishes to Oscar! Thanks for everything, I have not forgotten where I learned how to really play tennis.

Dear John, You and Oscar have electrified the St. Louis Tennis Community. I especially want to thank you both for the gifts you have already given to our area. Triple A will be alive with the EZ-Tennis Wegner method as will the indoor Academy at Vetta this winter. I am expecting big things, and have schooled my coaches to absorb every facet and detail from you guys. I have poured over the DVDs and CD-ROM. You really need to come here often and let us do what ever you need to make the Wegner method gain a foothold here. We will give you all that we have.

John - The event you put together this past weekend in St. Louis with Oscar Wegner was truly exciting. I have rarely seen such dynamics and enthusiasm around a tennis experience. Participants seemed to be energized and empowered by the techniques while they enjoyed a relaxed family atmosphere. Thanks so much for everything you did to make it come true. To See Oscar in action first hand, is like those rare opportunities to see a master artist at work. Where the lines between magic and reality seem to blend. He innovates on the spot and you see almost immediate results. To see the players reaction upon the discovery of the new game potential is truly a unique and refreshing experience. Oscar moves between feel and intellect seamlessly giving the subject a blend of reasoning and sensory stimulation that breaks old structures and creates simple yet energizing combinations. Oscar Wegner is to tennis teaching what Roger Federer is to the game of tennis….an almost selfless combination of talent, instinct and innovation on the fly.

Hello all, Just a quick note in response to St. Louis clinic I attended with Oscar Wegner and John Carpenter. I first met Oscar at the ITA coaches convention, when he was a featured presenter. I was amazed at his methodology and how he teaches to copy the pros for best results. I am totally convinced that he is 100% correct in every aspect of the game that was presented. My kids both attended the clinic and have been to numerous camps for 7 years. Their comment to me on the ride home was, Oscar makes it so simple and easy. They were fired up like I have never seen them before...and so am I! As a former top NCAA player and student of the game for over 30 years, Oscar has once again, renewed my vigor and opened my eyes to the countless possibilities that lie within each of us to tap into our natural instincts and bring out the champion within. Thank you EZ-Tennis and Oscar.

The old way—footwork was key. I was skeptical at first. Oscar advised not to hit the ball so early, to wait, almost as if you’re pushing the ball, instead of hitting. It was easy, and felt very natural, even to this former college player. It really does work!

When Oscar moved to Florida in the 1990s to begin to concentrate on stamping out the last vestiges of the “myths” of conventional tennis instruction, he spoke at coaching conventions all over the USA. Through the internet and sale of his videos, he has influenced thousands of players and coaches personally by answering their questions and clearing up misconceptions. Here are a few sample questions that are submitted to Oscar which he answers in his famous tennis tips (click here for free email tips from Oscar himself) or just writes each person back.
He is still immensely popular overseas, traveling to England recently as their guest in 2006 to update their coaches on teaching Modern Tennis Methodology.
Oscar,
I purchased your video series about a year ago. It has made a big difference in my understanding of the game. My game has improved from a 3.5 to 4.5 playing 2 to 3 times a week. I intend to take your advice one of these days and get a piece of plywood tilted at 45 degrees to practice volleys. That will improve my serve & volley game tremendously I'm sure. The count to 5 after the bounce has helped me beyond measure. It does several things. Not just your timing, it keep your focus away from thinking of all that other stuff “teaching pros” tell you and lends to a single mindedness like playing in the zone. Thanks for all that you bring to this incredible game, M.W
Hi Oscar,
I'm not surprised at the problems getting teaching pros to adjust. I have been trying to get some of my friends to change their strokes ever so slightly, not revealing everything yet because I know they won't do it if I do. I have had some success with a couple of them and expect that their success will encourage others. As my 7 year old improves, I will get involved with her school tennis team and start working with youngsters there. By the way, I even got my wife out on the court and she hates to sweat. She had a blast and is looking forward to the weekend to play again. I have joined the tennis army and will stay in touch. Thanks again Oscar, K.
Hi Oscar,
For the last three years I have been digesting all your words of wisdom. Because of your logical, revolutionary, simple techniques, my game has improved tremendously. Every time I watch one of your tapes, I learn something new; however, I must admit for some time I did not quite understand your technique of hitting below the sweetspot for more power and feel. I struggled with the concept for many months thinking to myself, “Oscar has been right every single time. I must trust him again, even if it doesn't make sense at this time.” Like I said Oscar, I heard what you were saying, but was a bit afraid to try it. This past weekend I made an effort to try your advise. Like always you were right on target. This technique helped me take some of the topspin off my shot (sometimes I hit a little too much topspin when a powerful shot is needed to end the point) and really pound the ball into the corners. This came really easy on forehands. What all was going on? Was it my focusing more on hitting lower on the sweetspot causing me to wait more? Somehow it seems like other factors were involved than just the contact point. I could definitely be wrong. Also, I have a one handed backhand. Do I try to hit lower than the sweetspot on this shot too?
Feel free to email any questions you may have.
